14 take part in Summer Scholars Academy

Fourteen area sixth through eighth grade students participated in Missouri State University-West Plains’ (MSU-WP) Summer Scholars Academy. The students participated in several classes and handson activities in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math, organizers said. Jacob Poulette, assistant professor of computer graphics and programming and one of the academy’s organizers, said students really enjoyed this year’s event, which was the first since 2019 due to the pandemic, and several parents told organizers how much fun their children had. “We hope to do it again next year,” he said. “We are going to plan optimistically but be prepared to face challenges or potential cancellation based on the last few years.” Students attending included, front row from left, Rose Reeves, Riley Lilly, Kinley Simerson, Kahlan Poulette, Cole Andersen, Sam Elliott, Andrew McWilliams, Hayes McWilliams, Hudson Cox, Tate McWilliams, Adrienne Craig, Ainsley McWilliams, Connor Simerson and Tucker Keith. Organizers included, back row from left, Alex Pinnon, director of the William and Virginia Darr Honors Program and head coach of the Grizzly eSports team; CJ Collins, coordinator of management information systems; Associate Professor of Math Jerry Trick; Jacob Poulette; and volunteers Katie Poulette and Mo Totty. Apply now to participate in MSU-WP’s Host Family Program

Officials at Missouri State University-West Plains (MSU-WP) are now accepting applications for the Student Services Host Family Program. Implemented in fall 2021, the friendship program helps students become acquainted with the community, supports their experience at MSU-WP and encourages them to take advantage of a wide array of opportunities available in the area by pairing them with host families who can provide a “home away from home.” The initiative is open to all students who would like to connect with members of the community while they are in West Plains attending college, university officials said.

More great toe-tappin’ rhythms will fill the streets of Hardy again

It seems Main Street Hardy is a magnet for the browsers, the shoppers, the munchers and sidewalk hoppers when rolling rhythms seem to carry folks along from one antique shop to a novelty candy shop. Let the melodies and beats of Dennis Horton, Chuck Young and their band Overtime put air under your step once again this Saturday, August 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The group will be gracing the beautiful gardens of Dr. Thompson’s Park nestled right in the middle of downtown Hardy. Don’t hesitate to bring along a dance partner as their tunes and cadences are destined to bring back a sweet memory or reveal a hidden spark you forgot you still had. The park offers shade and comforting peace to sit in respite as lilting lyrics may carry you away. Bring an ice cream cone or soda, or just your ears and your heart to enjoy a wonderful Saturday afternoon in Hardy.
