The Thayer Freewill Baptist Church is home to the “Thayer Freewill Baptist Quilters for Christ.” It’s a benevolent organization that has existed for 20 years and has become a part of the church’s ministry. A group of ladies from the church and the community first came together years ago to make quilts and freely give them to those in need. They decided they would sew quilts of all sizes from baby quilts to king-size quilts and then donate them to families who had suffered fires or in some way needed a helping hand. Over the years the ladies have donated to a lot of disaster victims including the recent flood victims in Kentucky. Quilts are also given to nursing home residents. Once a year a drawing is held for a St. Jude Quilt, with all proceeds given to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Special quilts are also made and given to church members celebrating an upcoming wedding or having a baby. Recently, the Quilters for Christ are donated 29 twin quilts and seven Queen quilts to the Curt, Cliff, and Opal Young Children’s Home in Fort Smith, Ark.
